Maria in KI podcast Medicinvetarna

In the latest episode of KI’s podcast Medicinvetarna, Maria Bragesjö talks about her area of expertise post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

In the episode, she explains the difference between trauma as used in everyday speech and PTSD as a psychiatric diagnosis. Trauma in PTSD means that the person has been exposed to a threat, violence or accident that has caused fear for their life. In addition, the diagnosis includes criteria such as re-experiencing, avoidance and increased vigilance.

Maria’s current research at Rücklab

  • Intensive treatment for PTSD (I-PE) – An RCT investigating the effect, speed of recovery, and cost-effectiveness of intensive treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), compared to gold-standard trauma focused CBT. Read more about the project here.
  • Digital PE for PTSD – A feasibility study of internet-delivered prolonged exposure for patients with PTSD. Read more about the project here.

PhD student and psychologist wanted for Maria’s intensive treatment for PTSD project

Want to work at the forefront of PTSD research? Look here!

Maria Bragesjö and her team are announcing two exciting positions for her project on intensive treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

  1. A PhD student that will hold a project leadership position in a clinical trial of intensive exposure-based treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. You will play a central role in protocol development, regulatory processes, study execution, and analysis, comparing intensive prolonged exposure with the gold standard individual, weekly treatment.

  2. A Lic. psychologist or PTP psychologist for a project position at the Trauma Program, Psychiatry Southwest. Tasks include assessment of PTSD, physically and digitally as part of the research project.

More funding for PTSD research

We are very happy to announce that Maria has received two additional grants for her work on innovating treatment for PTSD!

Two weeks ago, we reported that Maria got 2.4 million SEK from CIMED.

Since then, she has received two new grants:

Firstly, she received 3 million from FORTE for her upcoming RCT on intensive exposure-based treatment for PTSD. You can read more about the project here. In short, it is about PTSD treatment during five intensive days instead of weekly treatment during three to five months.

In addition, she has received the ALF grant for clinical postdoc. The support consists of 500 000 SEK per year for 2 years with the possibility of extension for another 2 years.

These contributions will benefit patients through new high quality forms of trauma treatment.

Good job Maria!

Grant money to Maria

Congratulations to PTSD research, Maria has received a 2.4 million SEK CIMED project grant! 🎉

Maria’s study evaluates intensive treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an exposure-based treatment that is given for five days instead of the regular treatment time of three to five months. Preliminary research shows intensive trauma focused treatment to be as effective as when the treatment is delivered by weekly sessions, but with the advantage that the recovery rate is faster and the proportion of patients who drop out decreases.

Registration open for study on internet-delivered prolonged exposure for PTSD

The registration is now open for our study investigating the feasibility of internet-delivered prolonged exposure for patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Psychological treatments, commonly using trauma focused cognitive-behavioral techniques, like prolonged exposure (PE) are today recommended as first-line treatments for PTSD. Unfortunately, this treatment is not available to everyone who needs it. Therefore, we are investigating the feasibility of internet-delivered prolonged exposure for patients with PTSD.

Primal investigator of the project is Maria Bragesjö.

Maria Bragesjö new grant and expert in Red Cross committee

Maria Bragesjö has been appointed one of the experts in the Red Cross University advisory committee, a committee with the mission to contribute with external monitoring, expertis and a critical eye at the Red Cross research projects.

She also just received 350 000 kr from Region Stockholm Innovation fund for the development of an internet-delivered CBT treatment for PTSD.

About the project
The overall purpose is to increase accessibility to evidence based treatment for PTSD. The current project is a pilot study is planned to contain n=35 to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, safety and preliminary treatment effects of the intervention.

There is prejudice that internet-mediated treatment would not be possible to give traumatized individuals, but there is research that it is a safe and effective way to give treatment. In earlier research, Maria and others have shown that this type of intervention is effective and acceptable for newly traumatized patients. In the current study, this intervention has developed to fit patients with PTSD.

If the treatment proves to be effective and acceptable, it would increase the health care’s ability to offer evidence treatment to a large group of patients that today are missing out.

Maria Bragesjö receives award for clinical contributions

Maria Bragesjö has received the Swedish Behavioral Therapy Association’s (Beteendeterapeutiska föreningen BTF) award for clinical contributions.

The nomination mentioned Maria’s clinical efforts as a therapist learning and teaching Prolonged Exposure therapy (PE), a specific type of cognitive behavioral therapy that teaches individuals to gradually approach trauma-related memories. It also acknowledged her research focusing on developing early interventions for trauma and PTSD, including the CIPE (Condensed Internet-delivered Prolonged Exposure) method.

Maria Bragesjö is a lic. psychologist, PhD, lic. psychotherapist, a specialist in clinical psychology and psychological manager at the Trauma Program at Psykiatri Sydväst. She joined the research group in September 2021 and registered as a postdoc in January 2022.
